For me, the best pancakes to have on Shrove Tuesday are the traditional ones. Served warm, straight from the pan and sprinkled with caster sugar and plenty of fresh lemon juice - nothing beats it! They'll be lining up for these! You can cook Pancakes using 8 ingredients and 3 steps. Here is how you cook that.
Ingredients of Pancakes
- It's 1 1/2 cups of AP flour.
- Prepare 1 cup of milk.
- Prepare 1/2 tablespoon of baking powder.
- It's 1 of egg.
- Prepare 1 teaspoon of salt.
- It's 3 tablespoons of butter, melted.
- You need 1 tablespoon of sugar.
- It's of Chocolate chips/fruit (optional).
This was given to me by mum. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and caster sugar into a large bowl. In a separate bowl or jug, lightly whisk together the milk and egg, then whisk in the melted butter. Overlap the pancakes as you go on a plate fitted over simmering water, to keep them warm while you make the rest. (Or if you are freezing them stack them with a piece of baking parchment between them and pop them in a freezer bag).
Pancakes step by step
- Mix flour, baking powder, salt, sugar in a big bowl. Make a well in the middle and pour the milk, egg and melted butter, mix until fairly combined. Try not to overmix your batter. Don't worry about small lumps, they'll disappear once you cook your pancakes..
- Heat a lightly oiled flat pan over medium heat. I use a ladle to portion and pour my pancakes. Fry until you have bubbles that are fixed on the top. Flip the pancake and cook for slightly less time than the first side. I find it better to add things like chocolate chips by throwing them into the pancake while they're cooking, but you can add them to the batter if you're more comfortable..
- Stack the pancakes as they are done. Cover with your choice of toppings; butter, jam, maple syrup, honey, cut fruit, chocolate syrup.
To serve, sprinkle each pancake with caster sugar and freshly squeezed lemon juice, fold in half, then in half again to form triangles, or else simply roll them up. Sift the flour into a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Crack the eggs into the well and whisk, drawing in the flour from the sides of the bowl. Gradually add the milk and continue whisking, until you have a smooth batter. Mix the flour, salt, eggs and milk to form a batter.
